Events

The Club arranges occasional visits to local places of interest, as well as longer breaks away in Britain and the Continent. There is usually a walk followed by a pub lunch every month during the warmer seasons. Full information about these activities can be found in the latest issue of the Newsletter, but the principal details of upcoming events are listed here. Further information can also be found on the Google Calendar of HELC Events.

Please note that all Application Forms in the Newsletter are restricted to HELC Members only.

Future Day and Extended Visits

There will be three Day Visits in 2024. Please let Robert Addleman, visits@helc.org.uk, know asap which of these you would like to join. We will car share, but there is visitor parking at all the sites. These are great visits, so booking (with deposit paid to HELC) will be on first come first served basis - don't be disappointed.

The following list gives a brief overview of the visits; please download HELC-Day-Visits-24a.pdf for more details, and pictures.

  1. Crossness Pumping Station – 6 June 2024
This remarkable Victorian splendour was the beating heart of Bazalgette’s huge London sewage system.
Lunch and afternoon visit (up to 30). £ 36 pp

  2. De Haviland Museum Hatfield  - 11 July 2024
Very interesting local museum “The Mosquito Museum” with many aircraft / engines / helicopters. We've been before, but well worth going again!Day visit – including lunch. £ 36 pp

  3. Greatmoor Waste-to-Energy - 1 August 2024
I hope to find a good nearby pub to enjoy a lunch before the tour
    Afternoon visit (15 max). £20pp

Various ideas for day visits are being explored. Please look out for more information in future Newsletters.

If you have enjoyed an interesting visit please give details to Robert Addleman,
visits@helc.org.uk so that other HELC members might also enjoy it. All ideas are welcome.

Better still, why not become part of a team to organise visits? Many hands make light work, and it can be very rewarding seeing the pleasure that these visits bring to members.

Away Break: Warwickshire 15-19 June 2024

We are staying at the Mercure Warwickshire Walton Hall Hotel And Spa. The 4* Hotel is set in 65 acres of Warwickshire countryside within easy reach of the towns of Warwick and Stratford-upon-Avon.

The three pick up locations will be Hanbury, Welwyn Garden City and Harpenden. We will travel in a Golden Boy luxury coach with a Tour Manager.

There will be stops at National Trust properties on the outward and return journeys. Thus having a valid NT card will save you entrance fees.

The proposed itinerary will include bed, breakfast and dinner plus the following:

  1. Whole Day Visit to the Black Country Museum at Dudley.
  2. Blue Badge guided walking tour of the centre of Birmingham, with the opportunity to spend the afternoon at Birmingham Science Museum, or alternatives. Lunch included.
  3. Stratford-upon-Avon river cruise and lunch with time to explore the town.

The total cost for this break is £569 per person based on double occupancy. Single person occupancy will require a supplement.

If you would like to join us on this break, please complete the Booking Form on page 5 of the September HELC Newsletter.
